Chapter 22

Going Ashore

New Hope Town

Six hours after touching down at New Hope Main Terminal the word came down that the Rangers would be allowed to leave the ship for several hours but they had to be back aboard before lights out at 2200. Ciara Cassidy walked off the ship dressed in Ranger fatigues along with Miranda Balestiere and Adriana Klezewski, both of whom had business to attend to at Ranger headquarters after promising that she would come back aboard later that evening.

Ciara accompanied them to the main terminal where the two admin officers learned that they needed to report to the Administrative officer at the regimental headquarters. That worked for Ciara who wanted to go there as well because that was where the logistics office where her dad worked was located. They were allowed to borrow an electric cart to take them to the other side of the field where the decommissioned exploration ship Seeker served as the colonial capital’s main administrative headquarters. When they arrived they split up to go to their individual destinations with a promise to meet in the ship’s cafeteria within the hour.

The logistics office was easy to locate from the directory in what served as the lobby inside the main entrance on the starboard side of the ship. Ciara headed up to the main deck, the highest level with office space in it. When she arrived at the logistics office the teenager was disappointed to find the room empty and dark, and she was unsure where to go next. It had already been late in the afternoon when they had left the ship and she did not want to go around asking people for information and attract attention to herself so she headed down to the cafeteria to wait and find out what was on the menu. The young Cassidy girl was tall enough that anyone passing by would see a rather youthful looking female Ranger rather than a 14-year-old adolescent who had left the cargo ship without authorization.

Ciara was gratified when both Adriana and Miranda were able to finish their business quickly and appeared in the cafeteria just twenty minutes after she had gone there herself. The two officers suggested an early dinner in the cafeteria where they were, having heard that the crowded conditions in New Hope Town had made the lines at all of the other eating establishments exasperatingly long. Ciara agreed and suggested that after they finished eating they go to the residence where her dad lived, she knew what it looked like and she had already found it on the display map of the settlement in the lobby when she entered his address.

“Once we get there he’ll tell you the best place to stay or you can stay there once they let you all off the ship for good,” Ciara told them. “I can’t wait to see him again. I’ve only seen him and my aunt Molly in video mail for the last four years. I don’t know if either one will be there for sure though.
